Alien invaders
نویسنده
چکیده
Thousands of species have invaded new territories in recent decades, often aided by global trade and man-made habitat change. While many remain harmless, some may cause serious damage. Therefore, we need improvements in surveillance and in our understanding of which factors make a successful invasion possible.

Alien species in fresh waters: ecological effects, interactions with other stressors, and prospects for the future
1. Biological invasions are numerous in fresh waters around the world. At least hundreds of freshwater species have been moved outside of their native ranges by vectors such as ballast water, canals, deliberate introductions, and releases from aquaria, gardens, and bait buckets. As a result, many bodies of fresh water now contain dozens of alien species. 2. Invasions are highly nonrandom with r...
متن کاملDifferences in evolutionary history translate into differences in invasion success of alien mammals in South Africa
Attempts to investigate the drivers of invasion success are generally limited to the biological and evolutionary traits distinguishing native from introduced species. Although alien species introduced to the same recipient environment differ in their invasion intensity - for example, some are "strong invaders"; others are "weak invaders" - the factors underlying the variation in invasion succes...
متن کاملA risk assessment system for alien plant bio-invasion in Xiamen, China.
Bio-invasion has caused serious ecosystem damage and enormous economic losses in China, and it has been the greatest factor to island bio-diversity reduction. Xiamen, as an important seaport with a relatively high conservation value, is particularly vulnerable to bio-invasion for its typical island ecosystem as well as frequent human-made disturbance. As a result of field surveys, literature re...
متن کاملPredicting Invasion Success: Freshwater Fishes in California as a Model
S lakes, and estuaries are among the most highly invaded ecosystems in the world; in many of them, alien organisms are now a significant part of the biota (Cohen 2002). The best-documented invaders in these systems are fishes. Because many fish species are widely introduced, there is concern among scientists and managers over the homogenization of freshwater fish faunas worldwide (McKinney and ...
متن کاملImpact of Alien Plant Invaders on Pollination Networks in Two Archipelagos
Mutualistic interactions between plants and animals promote integration of invasive species into native communities. In turn, the integrated invaders may alter existing patterns of mutualistic interactions. Here we simultaneously map in detail effects of invaders on parameters describing the topology of both plant-pollinator (bi-modal) and plant-plant (uni-modal) networks. We focus on the invad...
